Labor members Sophie Watzlavick and Juan David Gonzalez Monroy were in Olso last week teaching a 16mm film workshop at Atopia, an artist run initiative dedicated to experimental film and video in Norway. For 5 days 13 participants learned how to shoot and hand develop their own 16 mm films. Filmmakers Marte Aas, Inger Lise Hansen, Greg Pope, Knut Åsdam and cinematographer Hilde Målme were also invited to give talks on their artistic practice and screen some of their works for the participants.

Analogue Zone is a six months work in progress project organized by LaborBerlin and Cimatheque in Cairo. It is based on a celluloid film training program, involving filmmakers, artists, and amateurs from Egypt, Germany, Greece and Lebanon. The program will consist in a collective and collaborative reflection and production on the theme of Transition – in its widest sense – whether political, cultural, social, economic, artistic, or aesthetic.
Analogue Zone’s first workshop will be the launching activity of Cimatheque, the alternative film centre opening in Cairo. It consists in an introduction to analog film practice – Super 8 and 16mm – from May 13 to 21st, 2012. It will be animated by LaborBerlin member Michel Balagué and LabA member Vassily Bourikas.
12 participants will learn how to operate Super 8 and 16mm film cameras, expose different film stocks as well as hand- process, edit and finally project their own films. Prospective participants need no previous knowledge of working with analog film, although experience in camera-based visual practices – photography, video, film and painting – is an asset.
Analogue Zone will coincide with the opening of a fully equipped permanent film lab with cameras, editing and projecting facilities at Cimatheque’s premises in Cairo, the first of its kind in the Arab region. The participants will therefore be able to further their experimentation process following the workshop.
Works directed by various members of LaborBerlin e.V., LabA and other Lab associations from Europe will be publicly screened on Monday May 14th, and the films produced by Analogue Zone participants will be shown at the Cimatheque, on Monday May 21st, 2012.

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn who won best international film award for CAT EFFEKT at the 4th Janela International Film Festival Recife. The artistic couple that collaborates under the moniker Distruktur was brought back to their native Brasil to present their work at a string of festival screenings and exhibitions.

The Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival dedicated one program to Distruktur’s films and exhibited their POSTCARDS series in an installation. If you happen to find yourself in Porto Alegre, make sure to check out the upcoming group show called VANISHING POINT in which Distruktir will present a double 16mm projection installation GUERRERO.

The Janela International Film Festival also invited Distruktur to teach a 16mm workshop. Entitled Corpo Sensível, the workshop was held from November 7th to 11th. Participants learned how to use a 16mm camera, shoot and hand process footage, edit and project celluloid. The result of the workshop was presented in a group screening. The goal was to help start an independent film lab in Recife. The festival sponsored lomo tanks, splicers, rewinds, film and chemistry.
Melissa and Gustavo report: “so far, there is no grassroots film lab in Brasil. We hope very much that a group of enthusiasts will start a lab, and discussions to do this have already begun. We think it’s only a matter of time until a lab is opened. Participants of the workshop came to Recife from other cities as well (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) to take part in the workshop. They’re friends with lots of people who are interested in working with celluloid.”
On the first day of the workshop, Melissa and Gustavo screened works by LaborBerlin members. The screening was attended by workshop participants, as well as festivalgoers. The program included:
Slow Club – Rasa Juskeviciute & Egy Boy (Super 8 Picnic in a Hand Lab – Vilnius)
Awe Schocks – Juan David Gonzales & Anja Dornieden
Beyrouth, Automne 2005 – Leïla Saadna
Les Noctambules – Sophie Watzlawick
Postcards – Melissa Dullius & Gustavo Jahn
Through – Guillaume Cailleau
H(i)J – Guillaume Cailleau

Richard Touhy workshop documentation
Published November 12, 2011 LaborBerlin Workshops Leave a Comment

The Workshop by Richard was well attended. After a detailed introduction on the logic of B/W reversal film, we went out and shot two 100 foot rolls of Orwo black and white film. We developed them in the lab and then applied bleach, fixer and second developer by hand. Afterwards we spliced everyone’s experiments together and screened them for the group. The results will also be shown at our next open screening, Wednesday November 16.
After the workshop Richard and Dianna stayed behind to help us figure out how to load and finally run the contact printer. Thanks to their previous experience with this machine we were able to understand how it works and all its potential uses.
Last Tuesday Nov. 8, we made our first successful test on the machine. We printed a short test strip with different light exposures. The next step is to run another test with a variety of filters to manipulate the contrast and then finally print a whole roll film.
